He made the comments while meeting far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. President Trump said ties between the two states have been flourishing. The pair have rallied against establishment politics, mainstream media and socialism ideology.

Trump told reporters: “The twilight hour of socialism has arrived in our hemisphere.

“Hopefully, it’s also arrived in our great country, the last thing we want in the United States is socialism.”

His statement follows the US teaming up with regional allies against socialist Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Since then, the US and other Latin American states have recognised National Assembly leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s president.

Trump has previously threatened “all options are on the table” in order to topple Maduro’s government.

His comments were welcomed by Bolsonaro who is considering allowing a US military base in Brazil, following allegations of Russian interference in the region to support Mr Maduro.

However, self-described socialist Senator Bernie Sanders has become increasingly popular since Trump’s election, according to Newsweek.

Democratic socialists Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib have also joined the House of Representatives.

Trump told Breitbart News last week he felt “very strongly” that the US would never elect a socialist.

He said: “Socialism vis easy to campaign on but tough to govern on.”

The President said in a state address: “America was founded on liberty and independence – not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free.”

Vice President Mike Pence previously said: “It was freedom, not socialism, that ended slavery, won two World Wars.”
