Taylor Swift: Why new album Lover is VERY different to Reputation | Music | Entertainment

The superstar embraced a slightly darker sound on Reputation, her 2017 opus that included the notorious Look What You Made Me Do.

Across the record, she alluded to much of the discourse around her public image, including celebrity feuds and backlash.

But now, speaking on Heart Radio, she’s explained how the upcoming collection – set for release in August – is completely different.

The key, she told Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston, is simply the fact that she’s not using it as a way of “responding” to anything.

“In every way I want this album to symbolise growth and things you learn along the way and things I find romantic,” she said.

“That doesn’t mean it’s just like a love album and everything’s a love song.

“But the album is very pure in a sense that it’s not in response to anything, like this album is not responding to any sort of adversity it’s really just, in my life, it’s like what would I write if I was just writing, purely.”

She added: “Because Reputation felt in a lot of ways like my only way to respond to certain things.

“It felt like, what do you write when you’re backed in to a corner? Well you write that album.”

In the same conversation, she also spoke about the events that led to Katy Perry making a cameo in her new video, You Need To Calm Down.

“She and I definitely have been on very good terms lately but I don’t think anybody knew it,” she revealed.

“We were just kind of reconnecting privately and just wanted to make sure that everything was really good with us and that it was like a very real thing before we let anyone know that we’re not only good but we’re friends again.

“So it was really wonderful to get to sort of unveil it to the world in a cheeky sort of funny way.

You Need To Calm Down is the second single from Lover; the previous one being the international hit Me!.

She has also been using Pride Month to rally support among her fans for the Equality Act in the US; urging them to sign a petition and also to write letters to their senators.

Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden airs weekdays from 6:30am.

Lover by Taylor Swift is out on August 23.
