“Wish I could be with you in Chicago- having fun & hanging out with folks who seem like family,” he tweeted.

“I’m deeply disappointed I can’t be a part of @SW_Celebration.

“I know everyone there will have a wonderful time making friends & memories that will last a lunchtime.”

He later elaborated: “Recording voice-over for: Dark Crystal prequel, Child’s @ChildsPlayMovie, Scooby Doo, then flyng to NYC to do press for @KnightfallShow on Seth Myers & Live with Kelly & Ryan on Tuesday 4/16.”

So the silver lining, at least, is that Hamill will be making multiple TV promotional appearances in the coming weeks.

Star Wars Celebration, which lasts all weekend, properly kicks off today with the Star Wars: Episode IX panel, slated for 11am local time (5pm in the UK).

It is widely believed that the title will be revealed: latest rumours include Will Of The Force, Skywalkers, and something including the word Hope.

Fans are also desperate for a teaser trailer to be released, but the possibility of this is a little less certain.

The official synopsis of today’s panel reads: “With the culmination of the Star Wars Saga arriving before the end of the year, the Star Wars: Episode IX panel is one you will definitely not want to miss!

“With Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Star Wars: Episode IX director JJ Abrams appearing on stage, you can count on plenty of surprises and special guests to keep your imagination buzzing for the rest of Celebration!”

Star Wars Celebration is also expected to be the launchpad for new TV series The Mandalorian, which debuts on Disney’s own streaming platform in November.

Star Wars: Episode 9 is out on December 19.
