Star Wars 9: UPDATE on Rey’s parents – will JJ Abrams REALLY retcon? | Films | Entertainment

In 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the scavenger character – played by Daisy Ridley – discovered that her parents were essentially nobodies. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) told her that they were junk traders who sold her, abandoned her, and have since died. Since then, fans hoping her background would end up having more significance, either in the context of the Skywalkers or the established characters we already know, have been theorising on ways the reveal could be reversed somehow.

However, it seems that won’t be the case.

Journalist KC Walsh claimed on Twitter to have found out that Abrams will remain loyal to Rian Johnson’s writing in The Last Jedi.

One follower had asked: “I’m not a huge Star Wars The Last Jedi fan (there I said it), but i think JJ Abrams retconning Rian Johnson’s ‘Rey’s parents reveal’ (one of the best of many strong writing decisions in the film) would be a colossal and unforgivable insult from a director, but also franchise POV.”

Walsh replied: “I’ve heard what they are doing and I’ve got to say I think you’ll be pleased.”

Of course it’s unclear whether or not Walsh’s informant was legitimate, but it would certainly make sense for Abrams to honour Johnson’s writing and move forward with the story.

Still, Johnson himself recently said he was happy for Abrams to do whatever he wanted.

I want to let go of all my expectations,” he told MTV.

“I want to sit back. I want to be entertained.

“I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff I wasn’t expecting him to do and just go along for the ride.”

Episode 9’s title and teaser trailer are both thought to be revealed at Star Wars Celebration on Friday.

The film will wrap up the entire Skywalker saga, as well as the sequel trilogy – which began in 2015 with Abrams’ The Force Awakens.

Star Wars 9 is out on December 19.
