The Isle of Wight NHS Trust said four patients were airlifted to hospital after the crash at 1.51pm in Forest Road. Fire crews are on the scene freeing people trapped in their vehicles. A spokeswoman for Isle of Wight NHS Trust said: “A major incident was declared at 13.51 today after a serious road traffic incident took place on Forest Road, Newport, involving two cars and a bus.

“The Isle of Wight NHS Trust can confirm that four people have been airlifted to mainland hospitals and currently 15 patients have been brought into St Mary’s Hospital.”

The spokeswoman said the airlifted patients were possibly taken to hospitals in Portsmouth or Southampton.

St Mary’s Hospital is in Newport.

Police have closed local roads including Forest Road from Gunville Road and there is no access from Betty Haunt Lane/Whitehouse Road.

Residents have been asked to avoid the area completely and respect the cordons and closures by officers.

Bus company Southern Vectis said the Route 7 via Shalfleet will be diverted via Calbourne and Elm Lane to Shalfleet in both directions.

Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, told Isle of Wight County Press: “We are aware of a serious collision today involving one of our route 7 buses.

“At this stage the full circumstances and details of any injuries are unclear and we are investigating.”

People are being asked not to attend the emergency department unless absolutely necessary.

The Trust tweeted: “A Major Incident has been declared after a serious RTI (road traffic incident). We are requesting that people do not attend the Emergency Department unless absolutely necessary.

“Please ring NHS 111 for advice and guidance if you have an urgent medical health concern but it’s not life threatening.”
