Meghan Markle v Kate Middleton pregnancy: Which Duchess is ‘totally in tune with her baby’

Meghan Markle is soon to give birth to her first child and the baby of Prince Harry. The infant will be born into one of the most famous families in the world.

The Duchess of Sussex has had her last official public engagement before her maternity leave, meaning the next time we see Meghan she may well be holding a royal baby in her arms.

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is a mother to three royal child, Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince Louis who is almost one.

The women are from two very different backgrounds, Kate growing up at boarding school in the UK while Meghan was raised in Los Angeles, California.

How did the two women’s body language compare on their last outing while pregnant?

Body language expert Judi James told that Meghan is “totally in tune with her baby” while Kate was “business as usual”.

She said: “Looking exceptionally petite and rather lost in a heavy dark coat, Meghan’s body language on her last public event before the birth shows a very soft and serene-looking side to the normally upbeat and energetic Duchess.

“She looks totally in tune with her baby, placing one hand on the front of her bump, with the splayed fingers gently positioned to look protective and proud.”

While Meghan is used to the spotlight, as a former-actress, it seems she is preparing emotionally for some time off. “She allows her hair to fall over her face in a partial cut-off gesture, hinting that she really is ready to back out of the limelight for a while to focus on the baby’s arrival,” Judi added.

“Her smile involves a raising of the upper cheek to use the eye area more than the mouth, which is upturned but closed and this kindly-looking smile suggests a more reflective attitude.”

Although she is preparing for motherhood, a huge change in any person’s life, the Suits star does not appear to be nervous or anxious. Judi said: “Meghan’s subtler cues still suggest high levels of confidence underlying the excitement and pride though.

“The splayed fingers on the bump and the way she holds her clutch bag from underneath, with an erect thumb, suggest she’s calm but happy about becoming a mother for the first time.”

Kate, on the other hand, seemed less preoccupied with her pregnancy when she was last seen sporting a bump – when she was pregnant with Prince Louis.

Judi said: “Kate’s body language seemed solidly set to ‘business as usual’ on her last public outing before Louis was born, with her open-mouthed smile and the hand raised to head level to touch her hair suggesting an actively gregarious approach with no obvious non-verbal references to her pregnancy.

“It’s the subtler cues that suggest any tension here.

“Her clutch bag is held from the top, with her fingers pinched together and pointing downwards.”

The Duchess of Sussex wore a long and flowing floral dress at the event, which was a gala at the National Portrait Gallery.

“Her floral dress appears styled to camouflage her bump and when she raises her hands to upper rib level in a partial clasp she avoids any bump-cradling here to bring her fingertips together in what looks like a very controlled precision gesture,” Judi said.

Judi also analysed what Meghan and Harry’s Instagram body language reveals about the couple.

Meghan deleted her personal account shortly before her wedding to Prince Harry, however it seems the former-actress is back on the platform.

Who is Meghan Markle? Quick profile

Meghan Markle was born Rachel Meghan Markle, on August 4, 1981 to parents Doria Ragland and father Thomas Markle.

Her father was previously married to Roslyn Loveless and Meghan has two elder half sibling – sister Samantha Markle and brother Thomas Markle Junior.

Meghan’s first television appearance in the USA was in an episode of the medical drama General Hospital in 2002.

She later moved on to roles in CSI, Without a Trace and Castle along with bit parts in Hollywood films including Get Him to the Greek, Remember Me and Horrible Bosses.

Meghan was also a “briefcase girl” on Deal or No Deal – but her most famous role was as Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits, which launched in 2011.

She was written out in the finale of the seventh series when her character got married, which aired in April 2018 – just before she got married herself.

Charity and humanitarian work

Meghan Markle’s career in television has gone hand-in-hand with her support for causes close to her heart.

She wrote about the stigma around menstrual health in an article for Time magazine and was a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada – with whom she travelled to Rwanda for the charity’s Clean Water Campaign.

And her commitment to gender equality has seen her work with the United Nations – receiving a standing ovation in 2015 for her speech to mark International Women’s Day.

In September 2011, she wed film producer Trevor Engelson, who she began dating in 2004.

But the pair divorced two years later in August 2013, citing irreconcilable difference.

She was in a relationship with celebrity chef Cory Vitiello for almost two years, before they broke it off in 2016 but the two remain good friends.

And in June 2016, she met Prince Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend.

Their relationship began in October that year and just over one year later, on November 27, 2017, the pair announced their engagement.

They married on May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Meghan’s heritage

Some have claimed Meghan Markle is the first mixed-race member of the Royal Family.

Historians are still arguing about Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III.

But Meghan will be the first royal to openly embrace a mixed-race heritage.

She has written about the difficulties of being a biracial actress in Hollywood as she claims she is not black enough for some roles and not white enough for others.
