The adorable photo was taken in Botswana, a place Harry said was “crucial” in them getting to know each other. His comments led royal fans to speculate Botswana was the place the Sussexes truly fell in love.

In the special snap the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can be seen tending to an elephant in the African nation just weeks after they first met.

A caption on the newly-released image reads: “Their Royal Highnesses travelled to Botswana to assist Dr Mike Chase of Elephants Without Borders in equipping a bull elephant with a satellite collar.

“Approximately 100 elephants are poached/killed every day for their ivory tusks.

“Using satellite technology allows conservationists to track their critical migratory patterns and to protect them and the local communities from human-wildlife conflict.

“The elephant pictured was sedated for just 10 minutes before he was up and back with his herd.

“Tracking his movements has allowed conservationists to better protect him and other elephants and ensure heightened protection for these beautiful creatures moving forward.”

Speaking during a joint interview shortly after the Sussexes announced their engagement, Harry revealed how they had camped under the stars in Botswana during the very early stages of their relationship.

Their trip to Africa provided a welcome break away from the public eye so they could kindle the flames of their fledgeling romance.

Speaking to the BBC Harry said: “We camped out with each other under the stars.

“She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.

“So then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to know each other.”

Harry also returned to Botswana for a solo trip in August last year but chose to leave his wife at home.

Harry’s visit was a working trip, so he did not feel it was appropriate to take Meghan with him.

At the time Kensington Palace said in a statement to ITV: “The Duke of Sussex is on a private working trip to Botswana, to join the annual general meeting for Rhino Conservation Botswana in his capacity as patron.

“He attended the board meeting in Maun and an RCB community project in Xarakao village.”
