Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are hosting an episode of TIME100 talks this evening and during the video call the Duchess has broken her silence on social media critics. The former Suits actress said the impact of trolling can impact everyone of us at a “deeper level”.

Meghan made the remarks when chatting to Alexis Ohanian, who spent 15 years building the Reddit platform.

When talking about the comments she receives online, Meghan said: “The good outweigh the bad but my goodness, the bad can be so loud.”

She went onto say: “We haven’t begun to realise the legacy all of these platforms are doing to us on a deeper level.

“We’re in it now but have a chance to get out of it.”

Mr Ohanian admitted that investing in tools to reduce “toxicity” is something the industry “put off” for a long time.

The TIME100 Talks that the couple appear in is focused on the state of our digital experience, with the pair focusing on the impact of social media and misinformation.

The episode, themed around the topic of “Engineering a Better World”, coincides with the Sussexes desire to create a safer, more compassionate and trustworthy space online.

When discussing the role of the media, Harry said: “The media’s role is absolutely vital in everything that’s going on.”

He suggested the importance of the media has been elevated in recent times, due to people’s desire to know the truth.

The online chat, which started at 6pm GMT, has had a number of guest speakers, which include Mr Ohanian, who is married to tennis star Serena Williams, a good friend of Meghan’s and Rappler CEO and executive editor Maria Ressa.
