Manchester United stars Smalling, De Gea and Pogba were all dreadful as the Red Devils slipped to a 4-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

The Red Devils went into the showdown on Merseyside needing to pick up all three points having recently lost matches to Arsenal, Wolves (twice) and Barcelona (twice).

Yet Manchester United were hapless in defeat against Everton, who emerged victorious thanks to goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott.

And the players were scared on the pitch with Smalling particularly concerned.

The England international, at one point in the showdown, told De Gea to calm the game down – despite United losing at the time.

De Gea, like Smalling, had a nightmare afternoon and was unable to inspire United despite wearing the captains armband.

Yet Pogba disagreed with Smalling.

The United star wanted his side to play with a quicker tempo in order to ensure they overturn the deficit.

However, his words appeared to fall on deaf ears with United failing to up the ante and press Everton.

Meanwhile, former Everton star Leon Osman has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be ruthless when it comes to rebuilding United this summer.

“I think it’s so difficult,” he said when quizzed on what Solskjaer should do.

“United are underperforming, they’re under-par, they’re not anywhere near the team we expect.

“What I’ve seen over the last four or five weeks, Rashford is the only guy I’d be determined to keep.

“If someone came in offering big money for any of the other players, I would seriously consider it.

“Can you negotiate deals? Can you move people on?

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has got a huge job to make the team not only what he sees Manchester United but to do that as quickly as possible because the turnover of players at the moment could be massive.”

United are next in action against Manchester City on Wednesday (8pm).

The Red Devils lost 3-1 at the Etihad when the two sides met earlier this season.
