According to Surrey Policing’s Road Policy Unit, the traffic incident occurred on J6 and has been classified as serious. A video from the service shows a huge fireball billowing smoke across the motorway. It is thought that a lorry rolled over and caught fire on the motorway.

Emergency support units are now working to clear J6 and release the traffic although the motorway remains closed.

They said: “We are looking to release trapped traffic and we are working on this now.

“The Motorway remains closed.”

There have no reports of casualties at the time of writing.

Traffic police have now reported that traffic is now being redirected.

One person on the motorway reported that seven fire engines had been seen dealing with the accident.

They said: “Lorry on fire close to M23 Junction, at least seven fire engines at work.”

It is though the accident occurred at 11am this morning.
