That’s according to Jose Mourinho who believes the fact the Reds are also fighting for the Premier League title could hamper their chances in European competition.

Last season Liverpool won 5-0 in Porto but former Manchester United boss Mourinho is convinced things will be different this time.

“Porto have a chance to win and go through,” Mourinho told A Bola.

“Compared with last season, I think Sergio Conceicao will ask himself questions about what happened in order to do something different this time around.

“The tie is open and what happened last year, I believe, can play for Porto in both games.

“Liverpool have absolutely fantastic individual quality, but they are disputing the league title which means that they will not rest players in the previous game or between the two games.”

Meanwhile Joel Matip has opened up on playing with Virgil van Dijk and how it helps him improve his performances.

“He’s a great defender,” he explained.

“And being around him, I think everybody improves. He has had a big impact on the improvement.

“It’s great to play [with] him. He’s a complete defender and he knows what to do.

“Every defender does things a little bit differently. You always need some time to really know each other.

“This is normal. I think we need this time in a good way and this is working most of the time quite well.”

Matip is also happy to be playing in the side again.

“It’s not too bad; I always know that I have to improve but it’s a good feeling to be on the pitch and to play,” he said.

“If you win it’s also not too bad. I’m happy. But you know you have always to improve, to get better, to be part of the team.”

Liverpool return to action against Southampton in the Premier League on Friday evening (8pm).
