Pictures from the scene show the terrifying moment the Bombardier Global 5000 executive jet touched down with witnesses describing how both wings came into contact with the runway as aircraft landed. The stricken plane then remained on the runway at Berlin Schoenefeld for several hours, forcing the airport’s closure dozens of incoming flights to be diverted. Schoenefeld is one of two Cold War-era airports that serve the German capital ahead of the long-delayed opening of a new airport, currently scheduled for October next year.

It is an important hub for the two biggest budget airlines in Europe, Ryanair and easyJet, as well as Wizz Air and Norwegian.

The first two Ryanair flights from Stansted to Schoenefeld were diverted to the city’s other airport, Tegel.

The airport has now reopened for inbound flights but officials have warned of continued disruption throughout the day.

A spokesman said: “Berlin Schoenefeld now accepting arrivals again but expect significant flight delay.

“Delays may still occur. Please inquire with your airline about your flight status. Reason is an inoperative aircraft on the runway.”

German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen said that the crew managed “to get the jet on the ground under very difficult circumstances and prevent worse things”.

The plane had been at Schoenefeld for maintenance and was flying back to its base in Cologne when it was forced to turn back.

The German air force, which operates the aircraft, said both wings of jet touched the ground as it landed at Schoenefeld airport after turning back because of a malfunction.

A spokesman said the flight crew was undergoing medical checks and the cause of the incident was under investigation.
