The final season of Game of Thrones is currently airing and it’s not long before Jon Snow realises his lover Daenerys is actually his auntie. While the other prominent incestuous relationship in the series is between Jaime and Cersei Lannister, it turns out Martin originally had different plans for Snow. According to The Independent, in the author’s outline for his A Song of Ice and Fire series he’d intended for Arya Stark to fall in love with her half-brother, who is later revealed to be her first cousin. The outline reads: “Wounded by Lannister riders, they will seek refuge at the Wall, but the men of the Night’s Watch give up their families when they take the black, and Jon and Benjen will not be able to help, to Jon’s anguish.”

It continued: “It will lead to a bitter estrangement between Jon and Bran.

“Arya will be more forgiving… until she realises, with terror, that she has fallen in love with Jon, who is not only her half-brother but a man of the Night’s Watch, sworn to celibacy.

“Their passion will continue to torment Jon and Arya throughout the trilogy until the secret of Jon’s true parentage is finally revealed in the last book.”

Meanwhile, Martin is still working on his next book in the series, The Winds of Winter.

Speaking with Hollywood Reporter, he said he’d been kept away from the outside world.

Martin said: “Yeah, I’ve been in isolation.

“My loyal staff — I have a couple of them with me — have chained me to the typewriter. They’re making me eat healthy food. It’s horrible!”

No doubt Martin hasn’t literally been chained to his desk, but it sounds like he needs all the help he can get to avoid distractions.

Last year, Martin said he’d been hiding in a remote cabin to finally finish The Winds of Winter.

The Wall Street Journal interviewed him over the phone for his new book, Fire and Blood, the first volume of a 300-year Targaryen history.

The outlet wrote: “George R.R. Martin is in hiding. He’s talking to me from a remote mountain hideaway whose location he refuses to disclose.

“It’s a cabin he visits when he wants to hunker down to finish a book—and he’s hard at work on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth instalment in A Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy series that spawned HBO’s hugely popular Game of Thrones.”
