EVERTON 1-0 ARSENAL

48: Aaron Ramsey starts with a positive and aggressive start when shrugging off a challenge and winning a corner. Mesut Ozil delivers before Kurt Zouma heads it clear.

EVERTON 1-0 ARSENAL

45: And we’re back underway at Goodison Park folks.

Double change for Arsenal with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey on for Mohamed Elneny and Sead Kolasinac.

Blunt

HT: Arsenal attempted just one shot in the first half – their fewest in the first half of a Premier League game since May 2016 against Man City (also one shot).

Twitter round-up

Duncan: Too many excuses from Arsenal fans for their very poor defending. They need to learn how to defend better.

Ben: What an absolute garbage first half that was. Lucky to only be 1-0 down. At least two subs needed at half time. Elneny and Guendouzi – doesn’t work.

Kyle: To put it into perspective Arsenal have conceded more goals than Wolves. 3 less than Palace and Newcastle who are 2 clubs who have been fighting to avoid relegation all season. Defensively they are a shambles.

HT: Well… Everton have completely bossed a lifeless Arsenal at Goodison Park. Unai Emery’s side simply haven’t turned up and don’t look to have the stomach for a fight.

However, it’s only a one-goal lead and Everton have been known for a collapse or two this season. Andre Gomes looking imperious in midfield.

45: Two minutes added time as Mesut Ozil collects the ball just outside his own penalty area. “What the hell is he going to do from there,” says the Arsenal fan sitting across from me.

43: Arsenal players surrounding referee Kevin Friend when Everton play a quick free-kick. Nobody seems to know why…

Everton can’t capitalise as Sokratis blocks Richarlison’s low cross. One negative for the Toffees today has been the Brazilian – looking a touch off the pace.

41: “Andre Gomes proving that it is indeed possible to boss a Premier League match while also somehow maintaining immaculate hair,” says Sam. Couldn’t agree more. It’s glorious.

38: Concern for Everton fans as Richarlison pulls up clutching his ankle. It’s either a genuine injury or he was embarrassed about running the ball straight-out of play.

Sigurdsson receives the ball from Gomes before calmly guiding the ball towards goal. Leno gathers easily.

35: Ten minutes remaining of the first half. Can Arsenal respond?

33: Why does it look like Arsenal aren’t playing for anything? Everton are the side in mid-table and NOT in a fierce battle for a Champions League position – yet the fight they have shown is impressive.

30: Arsenal’s defenders don’t look comfortable on the ball. Bringing it out and playing it out from the back has caused them SO many problems today.

“I don’t get this Arsenal team, it’s like once they leave London Colney and the Emirates, they lose the ability to play football or engage the faculties that help them play football. Very hard to recognise them when they play away,” says Tom on Twitter.

28: Calvert-Lewin has got the beating of Sokratis and Mustafi today. He’s winning all the flick-ons and it’s causing Arsenal major headaches. Richarlison profits from the latest but can’t find DCL in the middle.

26: Silly from Sokratis! Two-match ban for the Arsenal centre-back for grabbing Dominic Calvert-Lewin around the neck. So needless because the Everton forward had absolutely no support. Booked.

Sokratis will now miss the games against Watford and Crystal Palace.

23: Everton really enjoying themselves today. The high press is working a treat with Arsenal being swamped in midfield. Mohamed Elneny and Matteo Guendouzi need be more agressive and get involved.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles tackles Lucas Digne in the corner and throws his arms up to his players. He’s furious with his passive colleagues.

20: Panic at the back! Terrible backpass to Bernd Leno who is forced to race off his line and out of his penalty area. Calvert-Lewin is breathing down his neck and wins the throw-in.

18: Beautiful ping from Digne to find Richarlison on the other side of the field. the Brazil forward can’t bring it down and it falls to Andre Gomes, who fires high and wide.

17: Another bizarre thing is Arsenal’s decision to play these short corners against the side with the worst defensive record from set-pieces in the Premier League.

14: Quite bizarre seeing all the Arsenal players appealing for offside before Phil Jagielka had actually converted. Just seen another replay and it’s clearly onside.

11: At 36 years and 233 days, Phil Jagielka is the oldest player to score in the Premier League this season.

EVERTON 1-0 ARSENAL | JAGIELKA

10: He wasn’t even supposed to be playing!

Late inclusion Phil Jagielka has opened the scoring for Everton! Lucas Digne sends in a signature long throw-in from the left that Arsenal fail to clear. The centre-back arrives to turn home Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s blocked rebound.

Gunners up against it away from home… again!

8: Booked! Guendouzi is shown a yellow for a late reckless challenge on Digne. The defender goes down clutching his foot having been raked down the shin.

5: That challenge on Alexandre Lacazette looks to have done some damage. The French striker hobbled off the field for a bit of treatment in the aftermath. He’s back on now but still not moving well.

3: Should be 1-0. Phil Jagielka caught completely out of position in the middle and doesn’t have the pace to recover.

Alexandre Lacazette is played through but Kurt Zouma’s sliding challenge is just enough to put him off his stride. Mesut Ozil wins a corner from the shot but Everton clear.

1: And we’re underway in the only Premier League game of the day! FA Cup semi-final later of course.

Digne recovers

14:03: There was some late FAKE NEWS that Lucas Digne was ruled out – but whatever was bothering him during the warm up isn’t enough to stop him from lining up today.

Here they come!

14:00: Love these new sirens Everton play before Z-Cars at Goodison Park. They really ramp up the atmosphere send a bit of electricity around the ground.

Hold on…

13:57: The Sky Sports cameras were focused on Lucas Digne going through his warm up and the Frenchman pulled up in considerable pain.

It’s not clear whether the left-back will start now but Sir Leighton Baines is ready to replace him if required.

Coleman, Jagielka and Baines? Have I woken up in 2014?

Breaking News!

13:53: Big breaking team news at Goodison park, folks. Everton centre-back Michael Keane was feeling ill during the warm up and will be replaced by 36-year-old Phil Jagielka.

Jags has played a combined 144 minutes of Premier League football this season…

Can Toffees find their sweet spot?

13:50: Consistency has been Everton’s Achilles heel all season. A 2-0 win at West Ham last week gave them back-to-back victories for only the second time this season in the PL.

The last time they did it, all the way back in September, they actually won three on the bounce.

Beating Arsenal to do so again might be the minimum requirement if Marco Silva’s side are to continue their push to finish ‘best of the rest’ by snatching seventh place.

Still four points adrift of Wolves, and also trailing Watford and Leicester in the congested top half of the table, anything else will surely leave them with too much to do.

Twitter round-up

Princess Gooner: Tough game today. Never an easy place, Goodison, for us. This is a place where we don’t sit back & go for the break. This is the place where we blitz them, early on. Play your game, be disciplined & take those bloody chances when they come, as there may not be many.

Eden: Don’t see why Arsenal fans are complaining about Mohamed Elneny starting. This season, when he’s started in the Premier League, Arsenal have a 100% win rate. Say what you want but he’s a world class player and a vital point in our team.

Who’d you reckon Princess Gooner supports? Guess she didn’t have an option with a name like that…

Tiger…

13:40: Can’t cover a match on Merseyside without mentioning the legendary Tiger Roll, who brought the house down at Aintree yesterday by winning his second successive Grand National.

Judging by the noise at the course – I suspect a fair few Evertonians had a couple of pounds on him!

Sky Sports keep trying to wedge in references to the Grand National. “Today is the first of FIVE fences Arsenal have left to hurdle…” Terrific, right? Nope.

David: Because of unbelievably bad planning, my fault, I am stuck in an area with no internet connection and the only bar with a TV is showing French footy. Gunners I am with you in spirit.

Kyle: Marco Silva I think hasn’t been a success. To many poor results. With the squad Everton have assembled they should be in a better position to finish 7th. As for Emery he has been a big success and he is doing an excellent job.

Lazy: The idea that Emery has “overachieved” is strange to me. Sure he’s done a great job given the state of Arsenal he met on arrival but that’s about the standard we’d expect from him anyway.

I hope you enjoy Reims vs Lille, David. Or will they be showing Toulouse vs Nantes? Either way it’ll be a treat…

Dominant.

13:32: Arsenal have beaten Everton 97 times in league matches – more than any side has beaten another in English Football League history.

They are the finest – Emery

13:28: Unai Emery claims strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are among the finest he has worked with.

Emery built and nurtured his reputation at Valencia, Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain, where David Villa, Fernando Morientes, Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Neymar were established among Europe’s leading forwards.

Discussing the talented strikers he has worked with – although neglecting to mention Neymar with whom he had a strained relationship at PSG – Emery said: “I had at Valencia, Villa and Morientes; (Roberto) Soldado and (Aritz) Aduriz.

“I had at Sevilla (Kevin) Gameiro and (Carlos) Bacca. I had at Paris Saint-Germain, Cavani and Mbappe. Here I have Aubameyang and ‘Laca’. It’s perfect.

“Each striker has his qualities and characteristics but one is similar. They are strikers and score a lot of goals. All of them. That’s Villa, (Alvaro) Negredo, Carlos Bacca, Gameiro, Cavani, Morientes, and Soldado, and now here, Lacazette and Aubameyang. It’s the same.”

Pickford

13:24: Did we all see the video? Jordan Pickford appeared to be involved in a fracas in the early hours of Monday morning.

Northumbria Police and Everton are investigating the incident, and Toffees boss Silva made it clear he is “not happy” about it.

“If you ask me as a manager I am not happy with what happened,” the Portuguese said. “Football players have duties and obligations. It is a matter for us to remind him and everything we must do we already did.”

Silva will be hopeful of a knockout performance from his Number One.

El Capitan

13:20: So, Mesut Ozil starts his first away game of 2019 and Unai Emery’s made him captain.

Arsenal fans will be hopeful the playmaker can lead them to only their second victory away from home in the Premier League so far in 2019. The last was against Huddersfield in February.

LT: Everyone going crazy over the line-up. Aaron Ramsey is coming back from injury and we have Napoli on Thursday so we need to rotate the squad. Chill your beans kids!

Hamish: Denis Suarez has been a complete myth since joining the Arsenal. He’s barely got a look in – strange signing. Big three points up for grabs today to maintain the advantage in 3rd spot!

Jason: OZIL ACTUALLY STARTS AN AWAY LEAGUE GAME! This is it mesut, you have been playing great recently and deserve to start BUT YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO TURN UP! MASSIVE AWAY GAME!

Jason sounds extremely excited. Take LT’s advice and ‘chill your beans’…

Team News – Arsenal

13:15: Two changes for the Gunners from Monday’s win over Newcastle.

Granit Xhaka and Laurent Koscielny miss out due to respective groin and foot injuries while Aaron Ramsey is only fit enough for the bench.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang starts on the bench once again. Henrikh Mkhitaryan in for Alex Iwobi. Mohamed Elneny starts.

Team News – Everton

13:10: Nice and easy one this – Everton are unchanged from the side who beat West Ham at the London Stadium last weekend.

That means Kurt Zouma partners Michael Keane in central defence, while Bernard and Richarlison flank striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Ademola Lookman, Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun are on the bench.

Twitter round-up

Emmanuel: It’s been mixed bags for Emery & Silva. We’ve seen their ups & downs. Hard to place them, really. Fair to say they both deserve another season to stamp their marks on their teams.

Ed: I never expected arsenal to get top 4 this season but i always thought they could get it, if that makes sense. when we were on our 22 game unbeaten streak spurs fans absolutely rinsed me for saying we could get top 4. but here we are now exceeding expectations.

It’s hotting up!

13:00: No, I’, not talking about the temperate because it’s bloody freezing and I made the mistake of leaving the house without a jacket.

With the four-way battle for the final two Champions League berths hotting up, it is Arsenal who have moved into pole position with seven wins from their last nine.

They begin the weekend in fourth place, but today’s match against Everton is their game in hand on third-placed Tottenham, who are only one point above.

However, in order to capitalise Arsenal must show they are over their inconsistency away from the Emirates, having won just five of 14 of their matches on the road.

Afternoon

12:55: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League.

How’s everyone feeling today? We’re at Goodison Park to see whether Unai Emery’s Arsenal can tighten their grip on a Champions League spot or whether Everton can win a third-consecutive match.

But the Toffees have another reason for winning.

And that’s to end a run of four successive defeats against the Gunners. In fact, Arsenal’s 97 wins in this fixture is an English league record for one side against another.

It’s the only Premier League offering of the day – let’s hope it lives up to expectations.
