Former Arizona Senator Jeff Flake has even suggested that the only hope for the future of the Republican party, “is if they lose this election.” Mr Flake said that he had argued for Trump not to be re-elected, to save the party. Mr Flake said: “Republicans need to take a break and come back to the principles that have animated the party in the past and can present a coherent philosophy in the future.”

He added: “Of course my preference is to nominate any other Republican than the president.

“But I don’t think that’s going to happen.

I’m a realist, and I know this is currently the president’s party.”

He explained to Newsweek that the Republican party should take time to realign their values around “free trade, concerns about deficit and debt and supporting the current international order”.

Mr Flake talked about what he regards as the difference between a John McCain style republican ethos and the current one.

He said: “One is inclusive and meant to appeal to a broader audience, and the other is based on trying to scare people into supporting the party and to insult the other side.

“That won’t do the party any good in the future.

“The problem is about our image and reputation worldwide.

“We were the architects of this new world order with our trade relationships and security arrangements.

“We promoted free trade and Democracy.

“Now, other trade relationships are developing with us.

“China is really filling the void.”
