The problem of the Irish Backstop has been one of the major issues surrounding Brexit, and DUP MP, Jeffrey Donaldson has laid the problem at Ireland’s doorstep. Speaking to RTE radio’s Morning Ireland, Mr Donaldson urged the Irish Government to agree a timeline to the Backstop in order to help break the Brexit deadlock. Mr Donaldson insisted that a set timeframe on the matter would provide clarity for the public.

The DUP MP also insisted that he has no desire for a hard border between the two countries while also agreeing that there needs to be a compromise between the UK and Ireland.

Mr Donaldson’s comments come as the UK has continued to move towards the October 31 deadline without much more of an idea of how Parliament will solve the current Brexit predicament.

Moreover, Brexit has taken a slight backseat lately while the Tory leadership contest takes place.

Within that race, former Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson has emerged as the leading candidate to take over from Theresa May.

Speaking on the leadership contest, Mr Donaldson added that his party, “will work with whoever” becomes the next Tory leader.

He concluded by saying: “I hope the Irish Government will work with us to enable us to move to the next stage.”

Although the next Tory leader will not be confirmed until next month, Mr Johnson has become the leading candidate and received 114 votes in the first round of voting on Thursday.

Already Mr Johnson has boldly stated that he will take the UK out of the EU by October 31 with or without a deal while also insisting that he is the man to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of Number 10.
