Avengers Endgame box office: Director on Avatar BATTLE for all-time No1 | Films | Entertainment

The Marvel epic is a hairline shy of overtaking Avatar as the number one movie of all time worldwide.

According to Box Office Mojo, James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster has made $2.79 billion globally; while Avengers: Endgame is on $2.74 billion.

But, now almost two months on from its release, Endgame’s weekly hauls are slowing down considerably – and it’s anybody’s guess as to whether it can eclipse Avatar before it leaves cinemas altogether.

Speaking on the red carpet this week, Russo weighed in on the showdown.

He told MTV: “I know that it sounds very sensational and all, but I try not to focus on it.

“Because even if we don’t pass Avatar, there’s no way I want to have a shred of regret about anything associated with this movie.

“So I refuse to even consider it!”

Endgame clung on to a spot in the US Top 10 last weekend, making another $3.7 million – bringing its domestic total to $830.7 million.

Captain Marvel, now in its 15th week of release, is also still hanging around in the US charts: it added another $110,000 to its total over the weekend, bringing it up to $426.6 million in the US.

Marvel’s next release is Spider-Man: Far From Home, set in the immediate aftermath of Endgame.

Trailers indicate it will explore the idea of the Mutli-verse, opened up by the Snaps seen in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

It’ll also showcase the inevitability that half of the characters will have aged five years, while those who were victims of the Snap have not.

Russo confirmed of the pick-up: “Those people [who were] lucky to survive the snap are 5 years older than the people who just got back.

“The reason Spider-Man saw his friend again in high school at the end [of Endgame] was simply because his friend was unfortunately also dusted like Spider-Man was.

“Of course, there are people in his grade who didn’t die and they are probably already in colleges by now… Yeah it’s kind a complicated world now.”

Avengers: Endgame is out now.
